The Union government has deferred the scheduled census activities in Manipur, citing prevailing security challenges in the state.

New Delhi announced that the census exercise slated for Manipur will be put on hold until further notice. Officials from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner said the decision was taken after a detailed assessment of the law‑and‑order situation in the northeastern state.

The deferment affects the rollout of door‑to‑door enumeration that was to begin in the coming weeks. The central government has urged state authorities to restore normalcy and cooperate with security agencies so that the census can resume without compromising the safety of enumerators and residents.

No new timeline has been provided, and the Ministry of Home Affairs will continue to monitor developments. The postponement is expected to impact the accuracy of demographic data that feeds into policy planning and resource allocation for Manipur.

Stakeholders, including local officials and civil society groups, have called for swift resolution of the underlying conflicts to avoid further delays in the nationwide census schedule.
