The Union government has approved the use of 19 indigenous languages for the General Departmental Services recruitment process in Nagaland, aiming to broaden participation.

New Delhi has given the nod to incorporate nineteen local languages into the General Departmental Services (GDS) recruitment framework for Nagaland. The decision, announced by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, is intended to make the selection process more accessible to candidates who are more comfortable in their mother tongues.

Under the revised guidelines, examination papers, application forms and related communications will be made available in each of the approved languages. The move follows long‑standing demands from civil society groups in the state, who argued that language barriers limited the pool of eligible applicants.

Officials expect the policy to increase the number of qualified local candidates entering the state civil services, thereby enhancing representation and administrative efficiency in Nagaland's government institutions.
