The Union government has designated six districts in Punjab—Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Patiala, and Sangrur—as ultra‑sensitive drug zones, citing rising drug trafficking concerns.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced today that six districts in Punjab—Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Patiala, and Sangrur—will be classified as ultra‑sensitive drug zones. The decision follows a review of drug trafficking patterns and intelligence reports that indicate a surge in illicit drug movement through these areas.

Under the new classification, the districts will receive heightened surveillance, increased police presence, and stricter enforcement of drug control laws. The government has also earmarked additional resources for drug testing laboratories and anti‑drug awareness campaigns.

Punjab Police officials said the move aims to curb the flow of synthetic drugs and reduce the impact on local communities. They added that coordination with state authorities will be strengthened to ensure effective implementation.

The state government has welcomed the central directive and pledged to cooperate fully, noting that the designation will help protect the region’s social fabric and public health.
