The central government has cleared funding for 3.8 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Assam, valued at Rs 5,000 crore, alongside relief for flood‑hit districts.

New Delhi has given the green light to a Rs 5,000 crore allocation for constructing 3.8 lakh affordable homes in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The approval comes as part of the central government's effort to accelerate housing delivery in the northeastern state, where demand for low‑cost housing remains high.

The funding will be channelled through the state government and implementing agencies to build units that meet the PMAY criteria for quality and affordability. Beneficiaries are expected to include economically weaker sections and low‑income families, aligning with the national goal of providing a house to every citizen by 2022.

In addition to the housing scheme, the centre announced supplementary aid for districts in Assam that suffered severe flooding earlier this year. The relief package aims to support reconstruction of damaged homes and basic infrastructure, complementing the long‑term housing initiative.

Officials said the combined measures reflect a coordinated response to both chronic housing shortages and the immediate needs arising from natural disasters. Implementation will be monitored closely to ensure timely delivery of the promised units.

The scheme is slated to begin construction in the coming months, with periodic progress reviews planned by both central and state authorities.
