NEED 24 NEWS

Raichur, October 4: A Central Government team led by Dr. Manasingh, Director of the Rice Development Department, Patna, conducted a drought survey in various parts of Raichur district on Sunday.

The team, comprising Parth Pal, Under Secretary, Department of Expenditure, Government of India, and Rakesh Kumar, Under Secretary, Department of Rural Development, held a meeting with officials of various departments at the Devadurga Taluk Panchayat office.

During the meeting, the officials discussed the district’s rainfall situation, crop damage, crop-cutting activities and the overall losses caused by the drought.

After the meeting, the Central team visited agricultural fields in Manakal village of Devadurga taluk and inspected cotton and chilli crops damaged due to inadequate rainfall. The team later visited agricultural fields in N. Ganekal village, where it assessed the damage to cotton crops and interacted with farmers.

The farmers informed the team that due to the shortage of rainfall this year, they had not even been able to recover the money spent on seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural inputs. Normally, farmers get a yield of around 12 to 15 quintals of cotton per acre. However, this year, the yield has fallen drastically to just 2 to 3 quintals per acre, resulting in heavy financial losses.

The farmers also stated that the drought had forced many villagers to migrate to other places in search of employment. They appealed to the Central team to provide drought relief of ₹5,000 per acre.

Central Team Visits Ganekal Reservoir

The Central team also visited the Ganekal Reservoir and inspected the ongoing irrigation-related works. The officials interacted with workers at the site and enquired about their working conditions, wages and other problems.

The workers informed the team that they are currently being paid ₹237 per day, while they could earn between ₹700 and ₹800 per day by working elsewhere. They therefore requested the authorities to increase their wages.

Comprehensive Report to Be Submitted to Government

The Central team inspected the drought situation and crop damage in various areas, including Masarkal, N. Ganekal, Mandakal and Yaradona. The team interacted with farmers, heard their grievances and assessed the extent of damage caused to agricultural lands.

The team assured the farmers that a comprehensive report would be prepared based on the findings and submitted to the Government.

On the occasion, senior officials from the Karnataka Government’s Horticulture and Sericulture departments, Raichur Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Eshwar Khandu, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Hampanna Sajjan, Joint Director of Agriculture Department Prakash Chavan, Devadurga Tahsildar Nagamma Kattimani, and several district and taluk-level officials from various departments were present.
