The government approved ₹53,428 crore for social security pension schemes up to 2030‑31 and officially removed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s name from the scheme.

The Union government has approved a total budget of ₹53,428 crore for social security pension schemes extending to the financial year 2030‑31. The allocation is aimed at strengthening pension benefits for senior citizens, widows, and disabled persons across the country.

In the same approval, the government announced that the name of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which had been part of the scheme’s title, will be officially removed. The change will be reflected in all future communications, documents and promotional material related to the scheme.

Officials said the decision is intended to keep the programme neutral and focused solely on its social welfare objectives, without political affiliations. The revised naming is expected to be implemented from the next fiscal cycle.

The pension scheme, a key component of the country's social security network, will continue to provide regular financial support to eligible beneficiaries, with the newly approved funds earmarked for expanding coverage and improving service delivery.
