Census 2027 Special Enumeration to Begin in Snow‑bound Areas of J&K and Ladakh from Sept 1

The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that a special enumeration exercise for the upcoming 2027 Census will commence on September 1 in the snow‑bound regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The operation targets villages and hamlets that become inaccessible during the harsh winter months, ensuring that their populations are counted before the regular census schedule resumes.

Field teams equipped with snow‑compatible transport and communication gear will be deployed to remote mountain blocks, staying for a limited period to record household information, demographic details and migration patterns. The enumeration will be synchronized with local administrative bodies to minimise disruption and to verify data accuracy.

Officials say the special count is essential for accurate resource allocation, development planning and representation in legislative bodies. The data collected will be integrated with the main census database, providing a complete picture of the union territories' population before the nationwide enumeration begins later next year.
