The Central Air Quality Monitoring agency has directed Punjab and Haryana to take immediate action to curb stubble burning, citing severe air pollution concerns.

The Central Air Quality Monitoring (CAQM) agency issued a directive on Tuesday, urging Punjab and Haryana to enforce stricter controls on stubble burning.

The directive follows repeated violations of the 2022 ban on stubble burning, which has led to spikes in particulate matter and smog across northern India.

CAQM has warned that continued non‑compliance could result in penalties and increased scrutiny from environmental regulators.

The agencies are expected to collaborate with state governments to promote alternative disposal methods such as mulching and bio‑energy conversion.

The move comes amid growing concerns over health impacts on farmers and residents, as well as the broader goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
