The sarpanch of Calangute in Goa has urged authorities to declare a no‑shack zone close to the main beach entrances, arguing that temporary structures hinder public access and safety.
The sarpanch raised the issue during a recent meeting with local officials, pointing out that shacks and temporary stalls often block the pathways leading to the beach. He said such obstructions create inconvenience for visitors and can pose safety risks, especially during emergencies.
He proposed that a clear, shack‑free zone be maintained at least 20 metres from each entrance to ensure free movement of pedestrians and lifeguard vehicles. The sarpanch added that keeping the entrances open would also help preserve the natural aesthetics of the coastline.
The proposal will now be forwarded to the Calangute panchayat and the Goa tourism department for consideration. If approved, it could lead to stricter enforcement against unauthorized constructions near the beach access points.
