The Union Cabinet approved a ₹40,000‑crore programme to procure eight next‑generation corvettes for the Indian Navy, with construction assigned to GRSE and Goa Shipyard.

New Delhi – The Union Cabinet gave the green light to a ₹40,000‑crore defence procurement plan that will see eight advanced corvettes added to the Indian Navy’s surface fleet. The project, described as a next‑generation warship programme, aims to enhance maritime security and operational reach in the Indian Ocean Region.

The Ministry of Defence has allocated the construction work to two public sector shipyards – Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited. Both yards will receive contracts for building the vessels, which are expected to feature stealth features, modern sensors and missile systems.

The approval marks a major step in the navy’s ongoing modernization drive, which seeks to replace ageing platforms and expand indigenous shipbuilding capacity. Detailed design and production timelines are to be finalised in the coming weeks, with the first corvette slated for launch within the next two years.

Industry analysts view the deal as a boost for India’s domestic defence industry, reinforcing the ‘Make in India’ agenda and creating significant employment opportunities across the shipbuilding supply chain.
