The Union Cabinet has given its nod to establish a Special Marine Zone and a Special Processing Zone along Karnataka's coastline, aiming to boost maritime trade and industrial activity.

The Union Cabinet has approved the creation of a Special Marine Zone (SMZ) and a Special Processing Zone (SPZ) on Karnataka's coastal belt, as reported by Deccan Herald. The decision, taken in a recent cabinet meeting, marks a strategic move to harness the state's maritime potential.

The SMZ is expected to facilitate port‑related activities, while the SPZ will focus on value‑added processing of marine produce and related industries. Both zones are designed to attract private investment, improve infrastructure, and generate employment opportunities for the region.

Implementation responsibilities will be handed over to the state government, which will formulate detailed guidelines and oversee the development of the zones. While specific timelines were not disclosed, officials indicated that the projects will be rolled out in phases to ensure smooth execution.

Stakeholders anticipate that the zones will strengthen Karnataka's position in India's maritime economy, contributing to higher export volumes and regional growth.
