The Union cabinet has given its nod to a draft legislation aimed at curbing attacks on legal professionals across India.
New Delhi — The Union cabinet approved a draft bill designed to protect lawyers from physical assault, intimidation and other forms of violence. The legislation proposes stricter penalties for offenders, mandatory reporting of attacks, and the establishment of a fast‑track legal mechanism to address grievances.
Lawyers' associations have welcomed the move, saying it addresses a growing sense of insecurity among the legal fraternity after a series of high‑profile incidents. The bill also calls for awareness programmes in courts and police stations to sensitize officials about the rights and safety of legal practitioners.
The cabinet decision follows a series of consultations with state governments, bar councils and civil‑society groups. Once introduced in Parliament, the draft will undergo debate and voting before becoming law.
If enacted, the law could provide a deterrent against future attacks and reinforce the rule of law by ensuring that those who represent citizens in court can do so without fear for their personal safety.
