Residents of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand observe Budhi Diwali, a unique festival rooted in mountain folklore about Lord Rama's delayed arrival home.

In the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, a unique celebration known as Budhi Diwali takes place, distinct from the mainstream Diwali festivities observed across the rest of India. This festival is deeply rooted in local mountain folklore and serves as a significant cultural marker for the communities in these states.

According to the prevailing legend, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after his fourteen-year exile, but the news of his arrival reached the remote mountain villages with a delay. The inhabitants of these high-altitude areas, unaware of the immediate return of their deity, continued to observe the traditional day of Diwali.

However, when the news finally arrived that Lord Rama had already returned, the villagers decided to celebrate the occasion separately to honor his homecoming. This delayed celebration is what is now known as Budhi Diwali, marking the specific day when the news of the King's return was received in the mountains.

The festival is characterized by specific rituals and offerings that differ from the standard Diwali practices in the plains. It highlights the unique cultural identity of the Himalayan states, where local traditions often diverge from national norms due to geographical isolation and distinct historical narratives.

For the people of Himachal and Uttarakhand, Budhi Diwali is not just a religious event but a testament to the rich folklore that has been preserved and passed down through generations in the mountainous terrain.
