The newly opened Brahmaputra cargo route to Dhaka is expected to create fresh export avenues for Assam and lower transportation expenses, the state chief minister said.
The Assam government has inaugurated a riverine cargo corridor along the Brahmaputra that connects directly to Dhaka, Bangladesh. The waterway is designed to carry bulk goods such as agricultural produce, minerals and manufactured items, offering an alternative to road and rail freight.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the route will open new export opportunities for local producers and significantly reduce logistics costs, making Assamese products more competitive in regional markets. He noted that river transport is inherently cheaper and less congested than over‑land options.
Trade officials anticipate that the corridor will strengthen economic ties between the two neighboring states and encourage private sector investment in warehousing and handling facilities along the banks. The first commercial shipments are slated to begin within weeks, pending final clearances.
Stakeholders expect the initiative to spur job creation in logistics, port services and ancillary industries, while also contributing to the broader goal of enhancing India‑Bangladesh connectivity under existing bilateral agreements.
