BJP workers in Jagalur, Karnataka, called a bandh to protest their exclusion from the state’s drought list, demanding inclusion and support for affected farmers.
In Jagalur, a town in Karnataka’s Davangere district, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a bandh on Tuesday after they were omitted from the state’s official drought list. The list, which identifies villages eligible for relief measures such as irrigation support and financial aid, did not include Jagalur, prompting local BJP cadres to take action.
The bandh saw several hundred workers block main roads and set up protest stalls along the town’s commercial lanes. They demanded that the state government revise the list to include Jagalur and provide the promised drought relief.
Local authorities responded by deploying police to maintain order, but the protest remained largely peaceful. Farmers in the area expressed support for the bandh, citing the lack of assistance as a major setback to their livelihoods.
A senior BJP leader in the region said the party would continue to press the government for a reassessment of the drought list and for immediate relief measures for the affected communities.
The bandh is expected to continue for the next 24 hours, with the BJP calling on its supporters to stay on the streets until their demands are met.
