Bihar warns against eating, buying or selling fish from Nepal floodwaters

The Bihar health department has issued an advisory prohibiting the consumption, purchase or sale of fish caught in flood‑affected waters flowing from Nepal, citing contamination risks.
The health ministry of Bihar released a public notice on Monday urging residents to avoid any fish that has been harvested from waters originating in flood‑hit regions of Nepal. Officials said the floodwaters may carry pollutants and pathogens that could pose a health hazard if the fish are consumed.
The advisory specifically instructs consumers, vendors and fish traders to refrain from buying, selling or cooking such fish until further tests confirm safety. Authorities have set up checkpoints at major fish markets in Patna and other districts to enforce the directive.
The department has also launched an information campaign through local media and social platforms, reminding people that the precaution is temporary and aimed at preventing food‑borne illnesses. The warning will remain in effect pending a detailed water‑quality assessment by state laboratories.
