Village courts in Bihar have disposed of more than 200,000 pending cases and have raised concerns about police interference in their proceedings.

The network of village courts operating under Bihar's panchayat justice system reported that they have resolved over 2 lakh criminal and civil cases that had been pending for years. The data, released by the state’s Department of Rural Development, shows a significant reduction in backlog, reflecting the courts' role in delivering swift, community‑based justice.

While celebrating the clearance of cases, the courts also highlighted instances where police officials allegedly interfered with the proceedings, affecting the impartiality of judgments. Court officials submitted a formal note to the state government seeking clarification on the alleged interference and requesting safeguards to protect the autonomy of the village courts.

State authorities have said they will review the complaints and ensure that the village courts can function without undue external pressure. The move is seen as part of Bihar's broader effort to strengthen grassroots dispute resolution mechanisms.
