The Bihar government has upgraded 135 primary health centres to 30‑bed community health centres in all 38 districts, deploying specialist doctors to improve rural care.
The state health ministry announced that 135 existing primary health centres (PHCs) across Bihar’s 38 districts have been converted into 30‑bed community health centres (CHCs). This upgrade is part of a broader effort to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure in rural areas.
Each upgraded centre will now host specialist doctors, including physicians, gynecologists and pediatricians, enabling patients to receive advanced medical attention without traveling to distant urban hospitals. The presence of specialists is expected to reduce referral rates and improve treatment outcomes for common and chronic ailments.
According to a statement released by the Bihar Health Department, the new CHCs will operate with enhanced diagnostic facilities, laboratory services and a dedicated pharmacy, aligning with national guidelines for community health services. The department expects the initiative to boost accessibility and reduce the burden on tertiary hospitals.
The move follows previous state‑wide health campaigns aimed at expanding coverage under the National Health Mission, reflecting Bihar’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage for its population.
