The Bihar government has issued a directive requiring teachers in state-run schools to wear formal clothing while on duty.

Patna, Bihar – The state education department announced that from the upcoming academic session, all teachers employed in government schools must adhere to a formal dress code. The circular, issued by the Department of Education, specifies that male teachers should wear shirts with ties and trousers, while female teachers are to don sarees or formal salwar‑kameez ensembles.

The move aims to project a professional image of the teaching workforce and align school environments with broader standards of decorum. Officials said the policy will be implemented uniformly across districts, with school heads responsible for monitoring compliance.

The department has also directed that any deviation from the prescribed attire may attract disciplinary action, though details of penalties were not disclosed. Stakeholders, including teachers' unions, have been asked to provide feedback within a stipulated period before the rule takes effect.

If adopted, Bihar will join a handful of Indian states that have formalized dress norms for educators, reflecting a growing emphasis on presentation in public institutions.
