Bihar-Jharkhand Finalise Son River Water Share: 5.75 MAF to Bihar, 2.00 MAF to Jharkhand

After a 25‑year dispute, Bihar and Jharkhand signed a MoU in Delhi allocating 5.75 million acre‑feet of Son River water to Bihar and 2 million acre‑feet to Jharkhand.
Delhi witnessed a historic signing on Monday as the Home Minister oversaw the memorandum of understanding between Bihar and Jharkhand, ending a quarter‑century stalemate over the Son River's water allocation. The two state governments met in the capital to formalise a pact that had long eluded resolution.
Under the agreement, Bihar will receive 5.75 million acre‑feet (MAF) of water from the Son River, while Jharkhand is allotted 2.00 MAF. The figures were arrived at after technical assessments and negotiations that balanced the agricultural and industrial needs of both states.
The settlement is expected to ease inter‑state tensions and provide a clearer framework for irrigation, drinking water supply and hydro‑electric projects in the region. Officials said the pact will also facilitate coordinated river‑basin management and could serve as a template for resolving other water disputes across India.
