The Bihar Home Department has taken action after a prisoner was illegally held for 16 days despite a bail order, withholding a jail superintendent’s pay raise and awarding ₹50,000 compensation.
A prisoner named Ramnivas Gupta was kept in jail for 16 days in Hajipur, despite a bail and release order issued by the Haji Pur court. The illegal detention drew attention from the state’s Home Department.
Following the court’s directive, the Home Department intervened and halted the proposed salary increase for the jail superintendent responsible for the violation. The department also ordered a compensation of ₹50,000 to be paid to the affected prisoner.
Officials stated that the action was taken to reinforce accountability within the prison system and to deter future breaches of judicial orders. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the enforcement of bail orders in Bihar’s correctional facilities.
