Bihar Govt Endorses Wastewater Reuse Policy to Conserve Freshwater

The Bihar government has approved a new policy that will allow treated wastewater to be reused for irrigation and industrial purposes, aiming to reduce dependence on freshwater sources.

On a recent session of the state cabinet, officials announced the approval of a wastewater reuse policy that will enable treated sewage water to be redirected for agricultural irrigation and certain industrial processes. The policy, drafted by the Department of Water Resources, is expected to cut the demand for potable water by up to 15% in the coming years.

Under the scheme, municipal and industrial effluents will undergo a two‑stage treatment before being released into designated reuse channels. The government plans to roll out the initiative in phases, starting with pilot projects in the Patna and Muzaffarpur districts.

The policy aligns with national water conservation goals and is part of Bihar’s broader strategy to address chronic water scarcity. Officials highlighted that the move will also create employment opportunities in the water treatment sector.
