The Bihar state government has withdrawn its plan for a single‑stage teacher recruitment exam after protests, and teachers' unions say they will call off the strike.

Patna, Bihar – The state government announced it will scrap the proposed single‑stage examination for hiring teachers, a move prompted by sustained protests from teachers' unions. The reversal was communicated by the Education Minister during a press briefing, where officials said the decision aims to restore the earlier two‑stage recruitment process.

Union leaders welcomed the development, stating that they will withdraw the strike action that had been scheduled for the coming days. They added that the decision addresses concerns that the new format could marginalise many qualified candidates.

The single‑stage exam, introduced last month, was intended to streamline recruitment but faced criticism for its lack of transparency and perceived unfairness. By reverting to the previous system, the government hopes to defuse tensions and resume teacher appointments without further disruption.

Stakeholders indicated that the focus will now shift to ensuring the existing recruitment schedule proceeds smoothly, with the education department pledging to monitor the process closely.
