The Chief Minister of Bihar urged the Union government to establish two new units of Banaras Hindu University in the state, aiming to expand higher‑education infrastructure.
Bihar's Chief Minister appealed to the Union government to sanction the creation of two additional units of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) within the state. The proposal is intended to broaden access to premier higher‑education programmes for students in Bihar and reduce the need for long‑distance travel to Varanasi.
The CM highlighted that BHU's academic reputation and research facilities could significantly benefit Bihar's youth if replicated locally. He also pointed out that the new units would create teaching and administrative jobs, contributing to the state's employment landscape.
The central government has not yet responded to the request, and officials are expected to review the feasibility and funding requirements before any decision is taken.
If approved, the BHU extensions could be set up in existing government campuses or newly identified sites, subject to land allocation and infrastructure development.
Stakeholders, including university officials and student bodies, have expressed support for the move, citing potential improvements in educational outcomes and regional development.
