After a quarter‑century of negotiations, Bihar and Jharkhand are set to formalise a water‑sharing pact for the Sone River today, aiming to resolve long‑standing inter‑state disputes.
The governments of Bihar and Jharkhand will convene today to sign a formal agreement on the allocation of Sone River water, ending a 25‑year stalemate over the river's distribution. The pact, negotiated by senior officials from both states, outlines specific quotas for irrigation, drinking water and industrial use, aiming to balance the needs of downstream and upstream districts.
Officials said the agreement will be implemented through a joint monitoring committee that will oversee water releases, data sharing and dispute resolution mechanisms. Both states anticipate that the pact will boost agricultural productivity in the Sone basin, where farmers have long faced uncertainty over water availability.
The signing ceremony, expected to be attended by the chief ministers and water resource ministers of the two states, underscores a broader trend of cooperative water management in the region.
