The disputed 90-degree Ashbagh rail overbridge in Bhopal is expected to be commissioned by December after remedial work, promising smoother and safer movement for an estimated 300,000 daily vehicles and cutting travel for about 150,000 commuters.

The Ashbagh area in Bhopal has been the focus of a long‑running dispute over a 90‑degree rail overbridge that forces traffic to navigate a sharp turn. Critics have labelled the design unsafe, while city planners argue it is essential to connect two major arterial roads.

After a series of remedial measures, including widening the carriageway and increasing the turning radius, the bridge is slated for completion by December. Engineers say the modifications will reduce the curvature of the turn, allowing larger vehicles to pass without bottlenecks.

Officials estimate that the upgraded structure will accommodate up to 300,000 vehicles each day, easing congestion on surrounding streets. The smoother flow is also expected to benefit roughly 150,000 regular commuters who currently spend extra time navigating the narrow turn.

The municipal corporation has indicated that the opening will be marked by a brief ceremony, after which the bridge will be opened to public traffic. City authorities anticipate a noticeable drop in travel time and accident risk once the bridge becomes operational.

Residents have expressed cautious optimism, hoping the improved infrastructure will finally resolve the traffic snarls that have plagued the area for years.
