Consumers in Bhopal may face thousands of rupees in extra charges when smart meters malfunction, with electricity company levying up to ₹5,500 for burnt meters and ₹400 for re‑seal fees.
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – Residents of Bhopal are confronting unexpected financial burdens as smart meters installed by the state electricity board begin to fail. The malfunctioning devices are reportedly causing the meters to overheat and, in some cases, catch fire, prompting the board to impose a burn‑charge of up to ₹5,500 per unit. Additionally, when the external seal of a meter cracks, a re‑seal fee of ₹400 is being levied. These charges are being added to the consumers’ monthly bills, creating a sudden spike in electricity expenses. The electricity board has yet to release a formal statement explaining the root cause of the failures or outlining a plan to replace the defective meters. Meanwhile, local consumer groups are urging the board to provide a clear timeline for repairs and to consider refunding the extra charges incurred during the period of malfunction.
