The inauguration of the Pink Line will push Bengaluru's metro system to the second‑largest in India, trailing only Delhi's network.
The Karnataka state government announced that the upcoming Pink Line will elevate the Bengaluru Metro to the second‑largest rapid transit system in the country, measured by route length. Once operational, the network will surpass the metros of Hyderabad, Kolkata and other regional systems, leaving only the Delhi Metro ahead.
The Pink Line, which will connect the city’s eastern and western corridors, is expected to add several kilometres to the existing network of the Purple, Green and Yellow lines. Officials said the extension will improve connectivity for commuters travelling across the metropolitan area and reduce pressure on road traffic.
Transport Minister K. N. Balagopal highlighted that the expansion aligns with the state's long‑term urban mobility plan, aiming to provide a sustainable alternative to private vehicles. The line is slated for inauguration later this year, pending final safety clearances.
The development is also seen as a boost for the local economy, creating jobs during construction and enhancing access to commercial hubs. Urban planners anticipate a rise in ridership as the new stations serve densely populated neighborhoods.
With the Pink Line's launch, Bengaluru will join a select group of Indian cities boasting extensive metro networks, reinforcing its status as a major tech and innovation hub.
