Bangladesh has announced it will seek a guarantee from India on the 1996 Ganga Water Treaty and may approach international forums for support.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry stated that it will formally request a guarantee from India regarding the 1996 Ganga Water Treaty. The move comes as concerns grow over India’s water allocation to the river.
In a statement, officials said Bangladesh may also seek assistance from international bodies such as the United Nations or other relevant forums to secure its water rights. The 1996 treaty, which governs the sharing of Ganga waters, has been a point of contention in bilateral relations.
Bangladesh’s decision reflects increasing pressure on India to honour its commitments under the treaty. The country hopes that international backing will strengthen its position in negotiations with New Delhi.
