A recent government audit disclosed that 611 schools in Rajasthan do not have any permanent structures, a finding highlighted during the Chief Justice of India’s ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign.

The Chief Justice of India’s ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign has drawn attention to a stark infrastructure gap in the state of Rajasthan. A government‑commissioned audit released this week revealed that 611 schools across the state are operating without any permanent building.
The audit, carried out by the Rajasthan Education Department, found that these institutions are using temporary shelters, open‑air classrooms or makeshift structures to conduct lessons. No concrete data on student enrollment or teacher strength was omitted, underscoring the scale of the problem.
State officials acknowledged the findings and said remedial measures are being fast‑tracked. They indicated that funds earmarked under existing school‑building schemes will be redirected to construct basic classrooms and sanitation facilities for the affected schools.
Education experts warned that the lack of proper infrastructure hampers learning outcomes and may affect attendance, especially among girls. They urged the government to prioritize swift construction and to monitor progress through periodic audits.
The audit’s release comes as the ‘School Thik Karo’ initiative seeks to mobilize civil society, NGOs and the judiciary to pressure authorities into delivering safe, dignified learning environments for every child in Rajasthan.
