Assam's Bamboo Boom Creates Jobs and Sparks Entrepreneurship, Says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam's abundant bamboo resources are being tapped to create livelihood opportunities, the state government said on Tuesday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted that recent initiatives to promote bamboo cultivation, processing and value‑addition have already led to the formation of small enterprises and direct jobs in rural areas.

The administration has introduced training programmes for farmers and artisans, along with financial incentives for start‑ups that develop bamboo‑based products such as furniture, handicrafts and bio‑materials. According to government data, the sector has added several thousand jobs in the past year, a figure that is expected to rise as market demand expands.

Officials also pointed to the environmental benefits of bamboo, which grows quickly and requires minimal inputs, making it a sustainable raw material for the state's emerging green economy. The CM urged private investors to explore the untapped potential of bamboo, promising continued policy support and infrastructure development.
