Residents of a remote Assam village are battling simultaneous threats from riverbank erosion and frequent elephant intrusions, jeopardising homes and livelihoods.

Villagers in a low‑lying settlement of Assam are confronting two pressing environmental challenges. Seasonal flooding has accelerated riverbank erosion, washing away farmland and weakening the foundations of homes that line the water’s edge.

At the same time, the area has seen an uptick in elephant movements, as animals stray from nearby forest corridors into cultivated fields. The wildlife incursions have resulted in crop damage and occasional human‑elephant confrontations, heightening anxiety among the community.

Local authorities have begun coordinating with forest officials to implement mitigation measures, including temporary barriers and early‑warning systems. However, limited resources and the sheer scale of the problems mean that residents continue to live under the constant threat of both land loss and wildlife conflict.

Community leaders are urging state agencies to prioritize comprehensive interventions that address erosion control and human‑elephant coexistence, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions to protect the village’s future.
