The Assam government announced plans to levy a green cess on industries that exceed emission standards, aiming to fund environmental initiatives.

The state government of Assam has disclosed its intention to introduce a green cess on industrial units that fail to meet prescribed pollution norms. The levy is designed to generate dedicated revenue for environmental programmes such as air‑quality monitoring, waste‑water treatment and renewable‑energy projects.

Officials said the cess will be applied to sectors identified as major emitters, though the exact rate and collection mechanism are still being finalised. The revenue collected will be earmarked for the Assam Pollution Control Board and related agencies to strengthen enforcement and support green infrastructure.

The move aligns with India's broader climate commitments and reflects growing pressure on state administrations to adopt fiscal tools that incentivise cleaner production. Industry bodies have been invited to submit feedback before the policy is formally drafted.

If implemented, Assam will join a handful of Indian states that have experimented with environment‑linked taxes, signalling a shift toward using fiscal policy to address ecological challenges.
