The Assam government is gearing up to launch a state-owned satellite aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and monitoring its border regions.
Assam's state administration has announced plans to develop and launch its own satellite, a pioneering step for any Indian state. The initiative is being positioned as a tool to strengthen governance across the region, leveraging space‑based data for a range of civil applications.
The satellite is expected to assist in remote‑sensing tasks such as crop monitoring, flood forecasting and disaster response, while also providing enhanced surveillance capabilities along Assam's international borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan. Officials say the technology will help authorities respond faster to security challenges and natural calamities.
The project is being executed in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). A tentative launch window has been set for later this year, subject to final clearances and the allocation of necessary funds.
