Assam government has announced that state staffers who remarry without divorcing their first spouse, or whose first wife remains alive, will receive a 20% reduction in their salaries.

The Assam government has introduced a new policy that will reduce the salaries of state staffers by 20% if they remarry without first divorcing their current spouse or if their first wife is still alive. The decision was announced during a recent press briefing by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

Under the new guidelines, employees who enter into a second marriage while their first spouse is alive will see a direct deduction of one‑fifth of their monthly pay. The policy aims to discourage polygamous relationships and encourage adherence to existing marital laws.

The announcement has sparked debate among civil service unions, with some officials arguing that the measure unfairly penalises personal choices. Others support the move as a step towards enforcing marital norms.

The government has stated that the policy will be implemented from the next fiscal year, and a detailed notification will be released shortly.
