Assam authorities have arrested 524 individuals and registered 441 cases in a sweeping operation targeting child marriages, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.
The Assam police, acting under the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched a statewide operation to curb child marriages.
In the first phase of the crackdown, authorities arrested 524 people across various districts and registered 441 cases under the Child Marriage Restraint Act.
The operation targeted families and community leaders who facilitate marriages below the legal age, seizing wedding arrangements and related documents.
The CM said the initiative is part of a broader effort to enforce the law and promote girls’ education, and police will continue monitoring and take further action against violators.
