Schools across Assam will be closed on September 21 as the state observes the Janmotsav of saint‑scholar Srimanta Sankardeva.
The Assam education department has announced that all government and private schools in the state will remain shut on Thursday, September 21. The closure coincides with the Janmotsav, the birth anniversary, of the 15th‑century saint‑scholar Srimanta Sankardeva, whose teachings form a core part of Assamese cultural identity.
Officials said the holiday is being observed to allow students and teachers to participate in cultural programmes and religious observances organized across the state. The decision aligns with previous years when the Janmotsav was marked as a public holiday.
Parents are advised to make alternative arrangements for children who may have scheduled examinations or extracurricular activities on that day. No further disruptions to the academic calendar are expected, and schools will resume normal operations on Friday, September 22.
The announcement was circulated through official circulars and local media, confirming that the holiday applies to both primary and secondary institutions without exception.
