A teacher's comment calling students '99% alcoholics' sparked a protest at an Assam school, drawing criticism from parents and officials.
A teacher at a school in Assam reportedly described the majority of his students as "99% alcoholics" during a classroom discussion. The comment, made earlier this week, quickly circulated on social media and ignited anger among parents and students.
Students gathered outside the school premises, chanting slogans and demanding an apology and disciplinary action against the teacher. Parents joined the protest, holding placards that condemned the remark as humiliating and harmful.
The school administration issued a statement saying the teacher's remarks were inappropriate and that an internal inquiry had been launched. The Assam State Education Department said it would monitor the situation and ensure that appropriate measures are taken.
Education experts noted that such incidents highlight the need for sensitivity training for teachers, especially in regions where substance abuse is a sensitive topic.
