The Assam government announced a coordinated multi‑agency strategy to implement the Solid Waste Management Rules slated for 2026, aiming to improve waste handling across the state.

Guwahati, Oct 1 (Hub News) – The Assam state administration unveiled a comprehensive multi‑agency framework today to operationalise the Solid Waste Management Rules that will come into force in 2026. The plan brings together the Pollution Control Board, municipal corporations, the Rural Development Department and private waste‑processing firms to streamline collection, segregation and disposal processes.

Officials said the strategy will introduce standardized segregation at source, expand door‑to‑door collection in urban wards and strengthen rural waste‑handling mechanisms. Funding is expected to flow from both state allocations and central government schemes dedicated to urban sanitation.

The rollout will be monitored through a joint task force that will issue quarterly performance reports and recommend corrective actions. The government hopes the coordinated approach will curb illegal dumping, reduce landfill pressure and improve public health outcomes.

Stakeholders, including NGOs and industry representatives, have been invited to participate in periodic review meetings to ensure the rules are adapted to local conditions while meeting national environmental targets.
