The Assam Rifles has initiated a programme aimed at improving literacy and empowerment among women in Manipur, targeting rural and tribal communities.

Assam Rifles, the oldest paramilitary force in India, has rolled out a focused initiative to boost literacy levels among women in Manipur. The programme, announced this week, includes basic reading‑writing classes, vocational training and awareness sessions on health and legal rights.

The force plans to deploy its personnel to remote villages and tribal hamlets, setting up temporary learning centres that operate alongside existing community schools. Trainers will use locally relevant materials and conduct sessions in both Manipuri and tribal dialects to ensure comprehension.

Officials say the effort aligns with the broader government goal of increasing female literacy in the Northeast. Early feedback from participants indicates heightened confidence and a willingness to engage in income‑generating activities.

The Assam Rifles chief emphasized that empowering women contributes to regional stability and socio‑economic development. The programme is slated to run for a year, after which its impact will be evaluated for possible expansion to other states.
