The Assam government is encouraging oil palm planting within tea estates as a new cash‑crop initiative aimed at diversifying agriculture and strengthening the state's economy.

The state of Assam has announced a policy drive to introduce oil palm cultivation on land traditionally used for tea production. Officials say the move is intended to provide farmers with an additional source of income and to reduce the region's heavy reliance on tea exports.

Under the new scheme, tea garden owners will be offered technical assistance and financial incentives to convert portions of their estates to oil palm. The government hopes the high‑yielding palm will create new jobs in planting, harvesting and processing, thereby generating broader economic benefits for rural communities.

The initiative aligns with Assam's broader strategy to diversify its agricultural base and attract investment in agro‑processing. While the program is still in its early stages, authorities expect that oil palm, a globally traded commodity, will open new market opportunities for the state.
