Assam plans to revive 71 beels, aiming for 6,000 tonnes of fish annually

Assam's fisheries department has outlined a comprehensive scheme to rejuvenate 71 beels across the state, recognising these wetlands as vital breeding grounds for freshwater fish. The initiative comes as part of a broader effort to boost the state's aquaculture output and improve livelihoods in rural areas.
The revival plan includes desilting, embankment repairs, and the introduction of scientifically managed fish seed in each beel. Funding will be mobilised through state allocations and contributions from the central fisheries scheme, with technical support from the Assam Agricultural University.
Officials aim to achieve an annual fish production of 6,000 metric tonnes from the restored beels, which could generate significant income for local fishing communities and increase the supply of affordable protein in the region.
Implementation is slated to begin in the upcoming fiscal year, with regular monitoring to assess water quality, stock health and harvest levels, according to statements from the state fisheries minister.
