Assam Holds 80% of Global Rhino Population with Zero Poaching, Says CM Himanta Sarma

Assam’s wildlife authorities confirmed that the state now harbours roughly four‑fifths of the world’s remaining Indian rhinoceros, according to Chief Minister Himanta Sarma. The figure underscores the region’s critical role in global rhino conservation.
The government also announced that no rhino poaching cases have been recorded in the current year, marking a significant achievement for anti‑poaching efforts.
Officials attribute the success to intensified patrolling, community‑based monitoring and the use of modern surveillance technology in protected areas such as Kaziranga and Manas National Parks.
Conservationists welcomed the data, noting that maintaining a poaching‑free environment is essential for the species’ long‑term survival and for sustaining eco‑tourism that benefits local livelihoods.
