Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to IIT Guwahati to take on a leading role in research and innovation to drive growth across the Northeast region.
In a recent statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called on the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to step up as a knowledge partner for the entire Northeast region. He highlighted the institute's strong research capabilities and urged it to channel its expertise toward solving regional challenges.
The CM outlined that a formal partnership could involve joint research projects, technology incubation, and skill‑development programmes tailored to the Northeast's unique economic and social needs. He stressed that such collaboration would not only boost local innovation but also attract investment and create high‑value jobs.
State officials see the move as part of a broader strategy to position higher education as a catalyst for inclusive growth. By aligning IIT Guwahati's resources with government initiatives, Assam aims to accelerate infrastructure development, improve healthcare outcomes, and enhance agricultural productivity across the eight‑state bloc.
IIT Guwahati, already recognised for its work in engineering, climate science and renewable energy, has previously partnered with industry and international universities. The CM’s appeal seeks to expand that footprint, making the institute a central hub for research that benefits the whole Northeast.
