Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that one‑quarter of the districts hit by floods remain inaccessible due to damaged roads and bridges.
The state of Assam has been grappling with severe flooding since early July, affecting more than 30 districts across the region. In a press briefing on Tuesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that roughly 25% of the flood‑hit districts are currently inaccessible, with major roads and bridges washed away or rendered unsafe.
The CM highlighted that the inaccessibility is hampering relief efforts, as aid convoys struggle to reach remote villages. He urged the state government to expedite repair work and deploy additional resources to restore connectivity.
State officials have already mobilised engineering units and temporary bridges, but the sheer scale of damage and the ongoing monsoon rains pose significant challenges. The CM also called for coordination with central agencies to secure extra funding and technical support.
Meanwhile, local communities report shortages of food, medicine and clean water, underscoring the urgency of restoring transportation links to facilitate humanitarian assistance.
