Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code across India, saying it is essential for national integration.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced his support for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to be adopted across the country. Speaking at a press conference, the CM said that a common set of personal laws for all citizens would promote equality before the law and strengthen the fabric of the nation.
Sarma pointed out that several Indian states have already incorporated elements of a UCC in their legal frameworks and urged the central government to take decisive action. He cited recent Supreme Court observations that a uniform code is a constitutional goal and called for political consensus to move the agenda forward.
The chief minister emphasized that Assam stands ready to cooperate with the Union government and other states in drafting a code that respects individual rights while ensuring social harmony. He concluded by urging lawmakers to prioritize the issue in upcoming parliamentary debates.
