Assam's chief minister said the state has stepped up its anti‑narcotics drive, seizing large drug consignments in recent weeks and warning of a new trafficking corridor from Myanmar.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state is confronting a newly identified drug trafficking corridor that originates in Myanmar and moves through Assam's border districts. He described the situation as "very worrying" and urged swift action to curb the flow of narcotics.
State police and the narcotics control department have intensified patrols, checkpoints and intelligence‑led operations along the frontier. In the past few weeks these efforts have resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illicit substances, though exact figures were not disclosed.
The crackdown also involves coordinated actions with central agencies, increased surveillance of known smuggling routes, and plans to dismantle the networks that facilitate the trade. Sarma appealed for continued support from the Union government to strengthen border security and prevent the drugs from reaching vulnerable communities.
Officials said the heightened enforcement aims to protect public health and safety, particularly among youth who are increasingly targeted by traffickers.
The administration will continue to monitor the situation closely and take further measures as needed to disrupt the illegal drug trade.
