The Arunachal Pradesh government will inaugurate the Northeast’s inaugural geothermal-powered drying facility in Dirang, aimed at helping local farmers preserve produce.

The state government of Arunachal Pradesh announced that a geothermal-powered drying unit will be commissioned in the hill town of Dirang, marking the first such facility in the entire Northeast region. The project is intended to provide a reliable, energy‑efficient method for drying agricultural produce, thereby reducing post‑harvest losses for small and marginal farmers.

The unit will harness the natural geothermal heat available in the area to dry crops such as chilies, ginger and other perishable commodities. By using renewable energy, the facility aims to lower operating costs and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel‑run dryers.

Officials said the initiative aligns with the state's broader push toward sustainable agriculture and climate‑resilient farming practices. They expect the drying unit to serve as a model for similar projects in other parts of the region, encouraging wider adoption of clean‑energy technologies in the agricultural sector.
