The Arunachal Congress has formally demanded that the controversial Siang dam project be scrapped and that all arrested protesters be freed.

Arunachal Congress, the regional political outfit, has lodged a formal demand with both state and central authorities to halt the Siang dam project, citing serious environmental and displacement concerns. The party argues that the hydro‑electric scheme threatens the fragile ecology of the Siang River basin and the livelihoods of local communities.

In the same statement, the Congress demanded the immediate release of activists who were detained during recent protests against the dam. It described the arrests as an infringement on democratic rights and urged the government to respect the right to peaceful dissent.

The Siang dam, part of a larger hydro‑power initiative on the Brahmaputra’s upper tributary, has faced sustained opposition from tribal groups, environmental NGOs and local residents who warn of irreversible ecological damage and loss of agricultural land.

Government officials have not yet issued a response, and the issue is expected to feature in upcoming discussions on infrastructure development in the Northeast region.
