Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh has said he will reduce police presence at the Siang River dam protest and withdraw the FIRs filed against protestors, following talks with opposition leaders.

The Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Pema Khandu, announced that the state will reduce the number of security personnel deployed at the Siang River dam protest site and will withdraw the First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against the demonstrators.

The decision comes after a meeting between the CM and opposition leaders who had raised concerns about the heavy police presence and the legal actions taken against protestors demanding a review of the dam project.

Khandu said the state government would review the security deployment and work with law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful environment while addressing the protestors’ grievances.

The Siang dam project has been a point of contention for local communities, who fear environmental and livelihood impacts. The CM’s statement is seen as a step toward de-escalating tensions in the region.
